Problem

Security teams use InsightConnect to automate repetitive, strenuous tasks, which allows them to focus on more important things. These teams find it difficult to understand, measure and share the value of automation. We had a great opportunity to deliver a feature that could translate the data behind the automations into more easily digestible information that could be easily shared and understood by anyone.

Raw data to useful information

Solution

I hypothesised that the best approach would be a new dashboard for InsightConnect. The old InsightConnect dashboard lacked data and insights into what is really happening in . We had some analytical data to support this theory as the customers weren’t really interacting with the feature. We also had some pre-existing feedback from customers that told us they weren’t completely happy with the dashboard feature.

Approach

We had a rough idea of what we wanted to do, but we needed to validate those ideas, and quickly ideate on them.

Research

I kicked the project off with some research. This involved me going through pre-existing customer feedback. Then I organised some calls with customers who had previously given feedback on our old dashboards. From this new data I was able to validate that we were on the right track for the project.

Ideation

I organised some workshops with my team. The purpose of these was to gather insights from various stakeholders in the company. I also wanted to hear thoughts from as many different internal personas as possible. This included:

  • Product managers
  • Engineers
  • Customer facing c-workers
  • Other members of the UX team

The workshop itself was split into two days. I chose a number of exercises that I borrowed from Jake Knapp’s excellent Design Sprint book. These included:

  • How might wes
  • Lightening demos
  • Crazy 8s
  • Solution sketching

InsightConnect design workshop

At the end of the workshop I had a lot of feedback, ideas and new concepts to work with. From this I was able to start creating some wireframes, which progressed into more finalised hi-fi designs.

Decisions

We discovered that two data points were increasingly important to our customers:

  1. How much time & budget have my automations saved me?
  2. What automations are not working?

Time saved

InsightConnect Time Saved We introduced a Time Saved metric, a line chart tracks how much time has been saved over a predefined time period. This allows our customers to accurately report on the benefits of automation to their stakeholders.

Job status

InsightConnect Job Status The Job Status metric gives analysts a real-time update on any potential errors that have happened over a predefined period of time.
